West Tennessee basketball update

            With the state tournaments coming up soon, here is a look at who is up for Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards in West Tennessee. This side of the state also has many teams in the AP state rankings published Feb. 13.

Class AAA

No.1 — Memphis East has stayed at the top of this list all season, and it looks like they will remain. They are in the top 10 in many national polls and their three losses have come to elite teams.

            Alex Lomax, from Memphis East is up for Mr. Basketball. The 5-11 guard is a 4-star recruit and the No. 6 in the state for the class of 2018.

No. 5 — Ridgeway is 24-6 on the season and will play Southwind February 21 for the district title.

No. 6 — Southwind has one more win and one less loss than Ridgeway at 26-5. The two have split in their two matchups on the season.

No. 7 — Cordova was second to Memphis East last season in the state championship. This season, they seem so far away from the top because of how good East is, but the Wolves still have a lot of talent and can make a run in the state tournament.

            Tyler Harris is up for Mr. Basketball along with Lomax. The 5-9 guard is a 4-star recruit and the No. 3 player in the state for the class of 2018.

Class AA

No. 2 — Dyersburg is having a great season with 25 wins and just two loses.  They just lost to Crocket County in the district championship after beating them February 10 by 26.

No. 9 — Douglass is 22-4 and playing Sheffield for the district championship February 21.

            They have Parrish Hewitt, a finalist for Mr. Basketball. He is a 3-star recruit and the No. 4 player in the state for the class of 2017.

No 10. — Haywood is 22-7 and just won their district championship.

Class A

No. 1 — Humboldt leads the way with 27-1 record and their lone loss came from an out of state school.

No. 3. —W.E.B. DuBois is still averaging more than 100 points per game and have a 26-5. They lost in the district championship to MAHS.

            Josh Conrad is a finalist for Mr. Basketball.

No. 6 — Mitchell is 22-7 this season and will play for the district championship February 21 against MASE.

Union City shooting guard Parker Stewart is also up for Mr. Basketball. The 6-5 senior is a 3-star recruit and is No. 3 in the state.

Division II

No. 2 — Christian Brothers is 25-3 on the season with the three loses coming to top programs.

No. 3 — MUS (21-8)

No. 5 — FACS (16-5)

No. 6 — Lausanne (20-8)

No. 9 — USJ (19-10)

St. George’s Chase Hayden is up for Mr. Basketball. He was also a Mr. Football finalist.
