2017 Division II-AAA Mr. Football Predications

Boy, these predictions weren't easy.

I may or may not have used a Magic 8-ball to settle things.

OK, I didn't do that. But I did go back and forth on quite a few of these guys. I can't remember having such a loaded pool of talent to chose from than this Division II-AAA. Even some of the guys I left out are some of the top recruits in the Southeast.

Have a look ...

*** EDITOR'S NOTE (Aug. 15, 2017): The TSSAA announced changes to the Mr. Football format on Aug. 14, 2017, after the release of this article.****

Predicted Winner: Jaylon King (Ensworth, senior, QB/ATH, 6-1, 170):Ensworth could be the team to dethrone two-time defending champion Brentwood Academy this fall. If that’s the case, King will be the catalyst. The Georgia Tech commit threw for more than 1,400 yards last season and rushed for nearly 800.

Predicted semifinalists:

Brendon Harris (Baylor, senior, DB, 6-1, 205): It’s hard for defensive backs to win Mr. Football. They really have to be special. Harris is just that. He’s one of the top players in the nation. The Tennessee commitment also got offered by 17 others, including Ohio State and Clemson. He’ll star on both sides of the ball again this fall for Baylor.

Camron Johnson (Brentwood Academy, senior, WR/DB, 6-1, 182):Johnson had six catches for 156 yards and a touchdown in BA’s state-title game win last season. He’s also winning in the recruiting world, as the 4-star committed to Vanderbilt in mid-June.

Tyler Badie (Briarcrest Christian, senior, RB, 5-10, 185):This prediction may shock some folks. But after watching his Hudl film, Badie – a Memphis commitment with 4.46 speed – is poised to rack up big plays and numbers this fall. I think he could be the guy the Memphis media push from their area.

SLEEPER Semifinalist:Gavin Schoenwald (Brentwood Academy, senior, TE/QB, 6-5, 225):Vanderbilt got an absolute gem in Schoenwald, who’ll most likely play tight end in college. He runs well, catches well, jumps well, everything. This season, we’re going to see how well he quarterbacks. My gut tells me he’s going to be good at that, too. He’ll definitely have a great receiving corps.

Others Considered:Maurice Hampton (MUS, junior, DB, 5-11, 190), Wesley Walker (Ensworth, junior WR/DB, 6-1, 185), Cam Jones (St. Benedict, senior, WR/Ath, 6-3, 205).

DIVISION II-AAA Mr. Football Line

Jackson Lampley (MBA, junior, OL, 6-4, 300):Lampley is a true 4-star talent with some 15 scholarship offers, including Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, UNC and Ole Miss. As a sophomore, he was the key run blocker for former MBA star and now Tennessee freshman RB Ty Chandler. Huge wing-span on this kid and aggressive style of play.

Predicted Semifinalists:

William Norton (Christian Brothers, junior, DL, 6-6, 270):I came really close to picking Norton as my predicted winner. Go watch his Hudl film, and you’ll understand why. He is absolutely dominant at defensive end. He’s only going to get better now that he’s an upperclassman. Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri and South Carolina have offered.

Jackson Hannah (MBA, junior, LB, 6-3, 217): Hannah took the summer recruiting circuits by storm, picking up offers from Oregon, Alabama, LSU, UNC and more. As a sophomore, he whipped countless left tackles putting his hand on the ground as a pass rusher.

Jack Sirmon (Brentwood Academy, senior, LB, 6-2, 225): Last season, I predicted Jack Sirmon to be a Mr. Football winner. Well, he finished a great 2016 with a remarkable performance in the Division II-AA state title game win over MBA. The Washington commitment wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he’s a semifinalist this season or finalist or winner.

SLEEPER Semifinalist: Tanner Antonutti (Ensworth, senior, TE/OL, 6-5, 260):Antonutti has valuable speed and reliable hands when used as a tight end. That will help him transition well to the SEC, as he committed to Tennessee over the summer.

Others Considered:Walker Culver (Baylor, senior, OL/DL, 6-6, 273), Dorian Hopkins (MUS, junior, LB, 6-0, 225), Ryan Winkel (Christian Brothers, senior, OT, 6-6, 280), Luke Coleman (Briarcrest, senior, OL/DL, 6-4, 305), Ed Agholor (Pope John Paul, senior, OL/DL, 6-4, 270).
