Welcome back to high school season and welcome back to PrepWeekly.com.
If you haven't been here before, then you have to understand that this is the third season of my TSSAA/Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Preseason Predictions.
Will we get them all right? Not a chance.
But we get close and even venture in selecting the Mr. Football semifinalists in each of the nine classifications.
We will release these in the coming days up to the start of the 2017 regular season.
So let's start with Division II-A.
*** EDITOR'S NOTE (Aug. 15, 2017): The TSSAA announced changes to the Mr. Football format on Aug. 14, 2017, after the release of this article.****
DIVISION II-A MR. FOOTBALL (LINE)
Predicted Winner: Brant Lawless (Nashville Christian) – Consider me shocked that Lawless didn’t win Mr. Football last season. Barring any injury, the 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive tackle who has committed to Tennessee should scoop it this fall.
Ani Izuchukwu (Davidson Academy, junior, DE, 6-4, 230): Izuchukwu holds more than 10 high-major D1 offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, LSU and Tennessee.
Luke Smith (Friendship Christian, junior, DE, 6-2, 280): Injuries prevented Smith from full production levels last season. Now healthy, Smith should show why Syracuse offered him a scholarship.
Cole Lusby (The King’s Academy, senior, LB, 5-11, 205): A Mr. Football semifinalist a season ago, Lusby should find his way on this list again thanks to his highly active style of play. Last season, he racked up 173 tackles.
SLEEPER SEMIFINALIST: Chris Akporoghene (The King’s Academy, junior, OL/DL, 6-5, 275): South Carolina, West Virginia and Memphis have offered. The more experience he gets in the sport, the more dangerous he will become.
DIVISION II-A MR. FOOTBALL (BACK)
Predicted Winner: Stone Norton (Davidson Academy): Norton tossed 26 touchdowns and threw for 2,600 yards as a sophomore last season. The 6-3 junior returns a wealth of talent around him, and Davidson Academy should challenge Nashville Christian for Division II-A West supremacy.
Da’Joun Hewitt (Davidson Academy, junior, RB, 5-9, 195): Hewitt still popped off for 1,627 yards and 24 TDs despite playing in an offense with a 2,600-yard passer.
Xavier Myers (Nashville Christian, junior, RB, 5-10, 180): Myers is now the key back in the NCS offense since star Lelan Wilhoite transferred to Siegel. Myers, who rushed for 1,173 yards last season, should churn out more in 2017.
Darius Hylick (Mt. Juliet Christian, junior, RB, 5-11, 225): Hylick averaged more than 10 yards per carry last season as a junior and has offers from Arkansas State and Chattanooga. But he’ll need his team to upset a few contenders this fall for him to win Mr. Football.
SLEEPER SEMIFINALIST: Jajuan Foutch (Friendship Christian, senior, WR/RB, 5-8, 165): One of the most exciting players in the state, Foutch can hurt opponents via kick return, carry, reception or interception. His Hudl film is definitely worth the watch.
